Foreign buyers & Lex Koller

The federal Lex Koller law restricts the purchase of Swiss residential property by people abroad. Whether you need an authorisation depends on your residence status, nationality and the type of property — some buyers are exempt, others need a cantonal permit, and some purchases aren't possible.

Rules also vary by canton, especially for holiday homes in tourist areas, which face quotas. Check your position early and, if needed, secure authorisation before you bid — a winning bid is binding.
